There is a deeper question underneath the technology, the economics, and the politics. It is the question that the convergence forces every human being to eventually face. It is the question no technology can answer for you.
Who do you become when you can become anything?
Identity has always been grounded in constraint. You are this body, in this place, with these capabilities, in these circumstances. Your sense of self — what you are, what you can do, what you are worth — has been shaped by limitation. The body ages. The mind has edges. The world sets boundaries. Self built on finitude.
What happens when the body becomes mutable? When modification is continuous, safe, reversible, and elective? When the material world becomes configurable rather than given? When your circumstances are no longer something that happen to you but something you specify?
The binding constraint shifts from technology to wisdom. The capacity to choose well when you can choose anything becomes the defining human faculty. This is not a distant philosophical question. It is a practical question that every technological advance makes more immediate.
When you can live anywhere, work on anything, build anything, learn anything, connect with anyone — what do you actually choose? Not what you have to do. Not what the market demands. Not what your biography dictates. What do you choose?
This is the question at the center of the transformation. The technical trajectory — abundant energy, unbounded computation, recursive intelligence, designed materials — is the easy part. It is engineering, and engineering problems get solved. The hard part is the one no technology solves for you. The hard part is consciousness choosing what to do with unbounded possibility.
This is why art matters. This is why creation matters. This is why the artist — the person who can see what does not exist and bring it into being — is the archetype for the age that is coming. Not because art is a luxury. Because art is the practice of choosing. The practice of vision. The practice of forming meaning from chaos and articulating it with enough precision that others can see it too.
In a world where the material constraints dissolve, the scarce resource becomes vision. The person who knows what is worth building becomes the bottleneck. The person who can feel what resonates becomes the compass.
